Webinar Series 2: Lyapunov-Function-Based Control Method for Power Converters
9 Kasım 2023 | 18:00

Webinar 2-1

Existing classical linear control methods developed for power converters are derived from linearized model of the converter. In this case, the stability is guaranteed when the converter operates around the operating point and disturbances are small. However, when the operating point of the converter is changed by load variations and large signal disturbances, the stability may not be preserved by the linear control methods.

Lyapunov’s stability theory method has gained significant importance in the research community. This method is based on formulating a Lyapunov function, an energy-like function, in terms of the error variables of the converter under consideration. The error variables belong to energy storage components like inductors and capacitors. The idea behind this control method is to derive a control law (usually nonlinear), without linearizing the converter model, which assures the derivative of Lyapunov function to be always negative. In this case, the stabilization of converter can be achieved not only in the vicinity of the operating point, but also away from the operating point of the converter. Lyapunov’s stability theory can also be applied to linear systems.

In this talk, the design of Lyapunov-function-based control methods will be explained for various power converters such as AC-DC PWM rectifiers, UPS inverters, grid-connected inverters, and shunt active power filters. The perforance of Lyapunov-function-based control method will be demonstrated by simulation and experimental results obtained from these applications.
